This blog was originally started as a challenge to generate huge traffic in limited time, but then my focus shifted quite a bit. The only challenge now is to stand out from the heap of blatant marketing blogs. You can read the full story here.

Monday Numbers: The Kind of Newsletter That Makes Me Want To Subscribe

How come I don’t have an email list at BloggerJET?! It’s been more than two weeks since I’ve started this blog and I didn’t even bother to create that little subscription form to collect your emails!

Can you believe that the guy who wrote 4000-words-long “Email Marketing Power Guide” does not have an email list of his own?

Being transparent sux…

The main reason it took me so long to come up with a good Newsletter idea is my transparency… And I’ll explain why.

99,9% of all existing newsletter subscriptions have a hidden purpose that bloggers do not wish disclose.

The most common ones: affiliate links, product sales, ads, traffic generation. Crafty stuff…

The typical pitch goes like this:

- Subscribe to my newsletter and you will get intant updates with my fresh posts!
or
- Sign up for my email course and you will learn how to ______ like a Pro in 14 Days!
or
- Leave your email and get all the latest news about ______!

Seems like a nice deal, right? But what about 100% transparent pitch? Will you subscribe to one of those:

- Subscribe to my newsletter to get blog updates as this will help me to generate traffic to my blog and earn money while feeding you with my affiliate links.
or
- Sign up for my email course so that I could sell you my lame ebook for $49 as this course will come to an end.
or
- Leave your email to get news, discounts, product launches, sales & any other stuff that may motivate you to make a purchase!

See what I’m talking about here? So how am I supposed to act with BloggerJET? The point of this project from the very beginning was unveiling every single step I take towards my aim of 100k monthly visits in 6 months.

The only workaround.

Thus, following the main principle of BloggerJET, which is transparency, I just had to tell you that this whole subscription thing is needed to grow my traffic.

Now, as you know it, you will most likely demand something really valuable in return for “being manipulated (kind of)“. Otherwise you’d most likely feel uncomfortable to subscribe.

And so I thought – what offer will make ME want to subscribe in the first place, even knowing that there’s some hidden purpose behind it?

Introducing: Monday Numbers!

Marketing is a game of numbers. The more you know – the more efficient you are.

I’m a big fan of statistics! Once I see a headline which contains the words: survey, study, report, research, analysis – I’ll jump in with that sound – “Om-nom-nom!”

I’ve got lots of e-books, cheat sheets & all sorts of reports on my hard drive and there are so many juicy statistics there!.. There are about 60 internet marketing blogs in my RSS reader!.. I follow lots of prominent people on Twitter

In other words – I get tons of cool statistics each week, but unfortunately it takes pretty much time and energy to dig through that pile of information and separate the weed from the chaff. I’d be really grateful to a person who could do that for me and send me a brief list of numbers.

That is how I decided to become that person & launch “Monday Numbers: The Kind of Newsletter That Makes Me Want To Subscribe!

What’s in it?

I will only send updates once a week, on Mondays, when everyone is fresh and ready to consume some useful information.
I will only include the stats, no outbound links, no useless ramble, no ads. I’d like to keep this thing short, as I respect your time.
I may include a link or two to some of my posts at BloggerJET to give them some extra exposure. I really hope it’s ok with you :)

If it really is, please leave your email address and I’ll do my best to keep my promises and fullfill your expectations!

Thanks! :)

And by the way I already got my first subscriber while writing this post! Seems that the tiny pitch in my sidebar was enough to convince him! Thank you, mate! :)

Disclaimer.

Going even further with my transparency there are some more tips I’d like to share with you.
This whole post is my newsletter subscription pitch which I will now stick to that “Learn more…” link in the sidebar widget.
The reason I’m doing this is because the small pitch I have used in the sidebar may not be enough to convince you to subscribe.
It is also quite convenient to have a page like this, covering your newsletter in detail, as you can send your visitors here in your future blog posts, once you feel it’s a good time to ask them to subscribe.

That’s it! …are you sure you didn’t forget to subscribe? I really hope my honesty won’t shoot me in the leg :)

ps: thanks 2 Dino 4 helping me out with the headline for this post :)

Just curious if you had given any consideration as to how much it’s going to cost you to send e-mail to hundred thousand subscribers through mail chimp? Based on their pricing that looks like it will cost over $500 a month just to do your e-mail newsletter. I only ask because I would like to grow some of my readership on various blogs and I also am working on some of my own e-mail solutions. I thought it might be an interesting to talk about how getting subscribers has its own cost in a future post. BTW…I did subscribe to the newswletter.

hey Doug, I don’t have “hundred thousand” subscribers as of yet :) so I wasn’t thinking about this, sorry :)

You speak true bro, which is why my mailing newsletter is never about single sales pitches for affiliate products, instead I may showcase only products I use as banners in a sidebar but never the focus of a newsletter.  I also use my mailing list for giveways, such as free software licenses and banner ads…etc.  Eventually when I get some bigger sponsors I will leverage giving away bigger tech items which will come soon as well.

Plus if you have actually 100,000 users in your mailing list, even with a 1% purchase rate you make far more than your $500 investment.  I also use Mailchimp and after having a mailing list for 2 years aren’t even at the 2,000 subscription rate yet.  I can get 1-2 mailings per month to my 500+ subscribers for free, I also don’t massively promote it.

ah… I saw you’ve subscribed to my newsletter.. but I’m planning to take it down actually :( All I got was 30 subscribers since the day I’ve launched it.. I guess marketing stats is not cool enough to attract attention

  • http://www.dragonblogger.com Justin Germino

Honestly, I get 3-5 subscribers per month to my mailing list and I only send out a monthly newsletter.
